The Commission assists Catholics and the wider community to understand and respond to God’s call to human solidarity as found in Scripture, the witness and teaching of Jesus, and the social doctrine of the Church. This heritage addresses economic and social justice, stewardship of the earth’s resources, human rights, and the nonviolent resolution of conflicts.

The Commission works to raise awareness of criminal justice issues and restorative justice practices, as well as Church teaching related to them, increase advocacy on behalf of public policy proposals that reflect a restorative and parallel justice approach. "Restorative Justice is a way of viewing justice that puts the emphasis on repairing harm caused by conflict and crime. Restorative Justice is collaborative and inclusive. It involves the participation of victims, offender and community affected by the crime in finding solutions that seek to repair harm and promote harmony." The Commission supports the development of activities at the parish, cluster and diocesan levels to implement the recommendations and concepts outlined in the State and National Pastoral Statements of the NY and US Catholic Bishops on Criminal Justice.

The initial emergency response following a local or national disaster is coordinated from the central administrative offices of Catholic Charities. The primary focus is on long-term recovery as disaster survivors begin to rebuild their lives. Catholic Charities addresses unmet needs with the coordination and equitable distribution of resources and volunteers. Catholic Charities works collaboratively with community organizations in accomplishing a Diocesan disaster response.

Provides immigration-related legal services. Services include consultation, counseling, and preparation of petitions and applications for, among other benefits, lawful permanent residency and U.S. citizenship.

This program provides ministerial and pastoral services for individuals incarcerated in county jails throughout the Diocese. The following services are available: sacramental ministry, including Mass, communion services and Reconciliation; pastoral visits in the housing units; counseling, and religious materials such as bibles, rosary cards and reading materials.
